The Memorial at American Cemetery
0
0
Beyond the American Cemetery reception building, the visitors can see a semi-circular Memorial with a bronze statue in its centre representing the Spirit of American Youth rising from the Waves. The Memorial is built out of Vaurion stone, quarried in the Côte d’Or, while its steps are made out of granite from Ploumanach in Brittany. The platform between the loggias is paved with pebbles collected on Omaha beach, just at the foot of the cliff. Extending from the basin, the central alley serves 10 squares of graves where the 9,387 soldiers are buried.
