The former walkway of the Château du Bas of Villarceaux, now the Saint-Nicolas terrace, is home to a medieval-inspired garden of medicinal and aromatic plants. In the Middle Ages, plants grew in squares bordered by hedges or woven wicker. They were of several kinds: medicinal herbs, from which the pharmacopoeia necessary for treatment was obtained (this is still done today), and those intended for cooking. Sometimes, poisonous plants were also included, to eliminate enemies or to advance successions. In the monasteries, flowers intended to decorate the statues of the saints were scattered around the squares.
