The Marne-Rhine Canal

The Marne-Rhine Canal, 195 miles (314 km) long, was commissioned in 1853. It links Vitry-le-François to Strasbourg and crosses Champagne, Lorraine, and Alsace. Since 1969, it has had only 154 locks (previously 178) thanks to the construction of the Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane, which allows the canal to cross the Vosges. Along the disused section of the canal, the communes of the Phalsbourg region have created the Vallée des Eclusiers (Valley of the Lockkeepers). This 5 miles (8.2 km) long greenway (photo) can be discovered by bike, on foot or by tourist train from the inclined plane.
