In 1854, the Manufacture des Gobelins received an order for twenty-eight tapestries for the walls of the Gallery of Apollo. Created in the 15th century by Jehan Gobelin, the Gobelin workshop specialises in Venetian scarlet dyes. In the 17th century, his descendants rented their buildings to Henri IV, who had tapestry workshops installed there. In 1662, Colbert bought the premises for the Crown. Appointed director of the workshops, Charles Le Brun installed in the Gobelins enclosure not only painters and upholsterers but also goldsmiths, founders, engravers and cabinetmakers. The Manufacture des Gobelins was thus born.
