Louis de Mornay (1619-1691), Lord of Villarceaux, lived at court in the entourage of the young Dauphin, the future Louis XIV. He was known for his taste in women. When he was appointed captain of the royal pack, the court whispered that he hunted a game that was neither fur nor feathers. His land of Villarceaux was raised to the rank of marquisate by Louis XIV. In 1651, the marquis seduced Ninon de Lenclos, the beautiful and literate courtesan. The two lovers hid their love affairs at the manor of Villarceaux, far from Parisian gossip, for three years, a record for Ninon. The marquis spent lavishly, his hunts and parties were renowned.
