“L’homme et la feuille” (‘The Man and the Leaf’) is an oil on canvas by Leopold Survage, whose real name was Leopold Frédéric Léopoldovitch Stürzwage (1879-1968). A former student at the Moscow Fine Arts School, a meeting with the famous collector Sergei Shchukin (a lover of Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin, etc.) determined his career. The discovery of Matisse pushed Survage to leave Moscow, his native city, for Paris. The French capital was to provide him with an artistic education as well as impressionist inspiration. ‘The Man and the Leaf’ is exhibited at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar.
