The main tools of the marine carpenter
0
0
Caulking cotton, caulking iron, and mallet are the main caulking tools of marine carpenters, such as those crafting the traditional barquettes marseillaises at the Borg shipyard. In carpentry workshops, the caulker is in charge of caulking the cracks or crevices of the planks of the hull of wooden boats. He also takes care of replacing bottoms or repairing seams. The caulking that ensures the watertightness of the ship traditionally consists of introducing between the outer planks vegetable fibers (hemp ropes, sisal, coconut fibers, etc.) that swell on contact with water, and then of covering the whole with waterproof materials (tar, coating, etc.).
