The Louvre under Napoleon I

During the reign of Napoleon I, the Central Museum of Arts in the Louvre was renamed the Musée Napoléon. At the time, the Louvre Palace was still inhabited by numerous artists who lived in the former royal flats. The Emperor had them removed from the palace, as well as the businesses set up in the courtyards, in order to limit the risk of fire. The museum expanded as new pieces were added, either purchased or stolen during the military conquests. When the Emperor fell, some of the works of art were returned to their rightful owners.
