Since Francis I, the kings of France have had a large collection of jewellery. Louis XIV had a passion for gems and his collection of hard stones exceeded 800 pieces. Many of them disappeared during the Revolution of 1789 or were sold at auction in 1887. The Louvre Gallery of Apollo now displays the remaining gems as well as a collection of goblets, vases and ewers cut from fine and ornamental stones (agate, amethyst, lapis lazuli, jade, sardony or rock crystal). Among the precious stones are three historic Crown diamonds: the Regent (140.50 carats), the Sancy (55 carats) and the Hydrangea (21.32 carats).
