The cicada is the loudest insect on the planet and is listed as such in the Guinness Book of Records. If the sound of Provence cicadas can reach 90 decibels - or the equivalent of a lawnmower - the loudest species is an African cicada, Brevisana brevis. Its song has been measured at more than 106.7 decibels, 19.6 inches (50 cm) away.
