The Lesser Bird-of-paradise feathers
2
0
The parade feathers of the Lesser Bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea minor) unfurl from the edge of the breast and the flanks of the adult male. Unlike the wing feathers, these dozens of single-function feathers - the courtship - are not functional for flying and do not have barbules to stiffen them. Their growth requires more than a year and they are gradually renewed.
