The Lascaris Palace of Castellar is recognizable by its porch tower covered by a dome of glazed tiles. It testifies to the importance of the Lascaris family of Castellar, former counts of Ventimiglia, whose coat of arms is still visible on the porch. At the origin of the prestigious eponymous Nice palace built under Jean-Baptiste Lascaris, this lineage also gave a grandmaster to the Order of Malta in 1636. Jean-Paul Lascaris, born in 1560 in Castellar, died in 1657 in Malta, where he was buried in the St John's Co-Cathedral erected by the Order in Valletta.
