Connected to Avignon by the Édouard Daladier bridge or the free river shuttles, the island of Barthelasse is the largest river island in Europe. Located opposite the Palais des Papes in the middle of the Rhône, which it divides into two arms, it offers the inhabitants and walkers 1,730 acres (700 ha) of agricultural land and preserved forest hosting many species of birds as well as a population of beavers and otters. Flat and green, the island of Barthelasse is particularly well suited to cycling.
