The upper town of Carcassonne is the largest fortified city in Europe. With 1.86 miles (3 km) of ramparts and 52 towers, the vast medieval city in the Aude department is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carcassonne is also one of the most visited destinations in France since its 19th-century restoration by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Sought-after by heritage amateurs, Carcassonne is renowned for its Gallo-Roman fortifications, the imposing Narbonnaise gate and its two spur towers, or the 12th-century count's castle of the Trencavel dynasty.
