21.7 miles (35 km) long and 9.3 miles (15 km) wide, the Sainte-Baume massif is the largest and highest of the Provencal ranges. It covers an area of 112,000 acres (45,000 ha) between the Var (90%) and Bouches-du-Rhône departments and culminates at Joug de l'Aigle and Signal des Béguines at 3,766 ft (1,148 m). It has a ridgeline of 8.2 miles (13.3 km) with steep slopes over 984 ft (300 m) and includes on its western flank the highest point of the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Pic de Bertagne (3,418 ft / 1,042 m).
