The landing beaches of Normandy
2
0
Essential places of memory on Normandy's shores, as in Courseulles-sur-Mer on the Côte de Nacre (Pearl Coast), the landing beaches extend over 50 miles (80 km) of coastline between Ouistreham and Quinéville. Operation Overlord began there on the morning of June 6, 1944. It sent over 150,000 soldiers to five beaches, from which many did not return. Juno Beach in Courseulles-sur-Mer was conquered by Canadian troops and witnessed the landing of Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, and King George VI.
