For almost 70 years, from 841, the Vikings invaded the coasts of the English Channel and the banks of the Seine. They mainly sought to plunder gold and merchants and took advantage of poorly defended Norman cities. The lootings were so important that the Danes were finally offered a tribute, the Danegeld. From 885, the raids ceased, and the Vikings of Rollo settled permanently. By a treaty in 911, they received a territory baptized Normandy or land of the Norsemen.
