The interior of Reims Cathedral's western facade was designed as a triumphal arch under which the kings of France passed at the end of their coronation. The carved wall, unparalleled in other French and European cathedrals, stands on both sides of the main door. The Knight's Communion is certainly its most famous scene. A priest and a knight face each other, each set in an ogival frame typical of that era. The precise rendering of the knight's weapons and coat of mail contrasts with the fervor of his joined hands. On the right, a soldier observes the scene.
