At the end of the 17th century, the creation of a bastioned wall around Briançon aimed to protect the city located in a vulnerable zone without wishing to make it a strategic fortress. However, the events of 1692 followed by the Treaties of Turin (1696) and Utrecht (1713) and the subsequent major border rectifications placed Briançon on the front line. The mountain city became the keystone of the defense of the Alps, with consequences in terms of fortification and logistical infrastructure.
