The July Column in Paris
0
0
Built on the site of the Bastille prison, the July Column surmounted by the Genie de la Liberté celebrates the Revolution des Trois Glorieuses (the Glorious Three) of 27, 28, and 29 July 1830, which brought Louis-Philippe d’Orléans to power. In 1840, when it was inaugurated, the remains of the revolutionaries of 1830 were buried in a crypt built under the column. After the 1848 revolution and the abdication of King Louis-Philippe, the ashes of the rioters were placed in a second crypt. The triumphal column – with a total height of 50.33 metres – is the work of architects Jean-Antoine Alavoine and Joseph-Louis Duc, his successor.
