The first Italian campaign against Austria, Piedmont and their allies lasted from 24 March 1796 to 7 April 1797. The ‘Armée d’Italie’, led by General Bonaparte, thus conquered all of Italy. The Austrian Empire had to abandon not only Italy but also the left bank of the Rhine. This lightning campaign in the first months reveals the military genius of the young general and marks the beginning of his dazzling destiny. The campaign began in Nice and ended in Leoben, 120 kilometres from Vienna. The names of several battles of this campaign are engraved on the inside of the southern pillar of one of the great arches of the Arc de Triomphe.
