After a long restoration, the Issenheim Altarpiece, centrepiece of the Unterlinden Museum, is once again on display in the chapel of the former Dominican monastery. In the Middle Ages, on ordinary days, the shutters were always closed, as in the picture. The Crucifixion scene is framed by St Sebastian pierced by the arrows of his martyrdom (left) and St Anthony threatened by a scary monster (right). Both saints were invoked to protect against diseases: St Anthony from the ‘holy fire’ disease and St Sebastian from the plague. The base represents the Entombment.
