Along with the Château de Versailles, the Hôtel des Invalides is one of the major symbols of Louis XIV’s reign. The Hôtel was built to accommodate disabled soldiers devoid of resources and to ensure a dignified end to their lives. Today, this action continues and the Institution Nationale des Invalides (INI) welcomes soldiers wounded in overseas operations, veterans of the Second World War, Indochina, or Algeria. Former members of the Resistance, survivors of the Shoah, and victims of terrorist attacks since 2015 are also cared for. Two buildings, one on each side of the dome, contain 91 specially equipped rooms.
