The hypothesis about the origin of the name

The Afrikaans words weid or wyd, that can be translated by wide and qualifying the broad lips, may be at the origin of the name of the white rhino, at the beginning of the 19th century. Although it remains uncertain, these words may had been understood by english speaking people as white, leading to the name white rhino. In contrast, the other African species, smaller and with prehensile hooked lips, was named black rhino. However, both species have a similar grey color.
