The Hundred Years’ War

During the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453) between the kingdoms of France and England, the French Vexin suffered numerous exactions. From his fiefdom in Normandy, Charles II of Navarre, known as Charles the Bad, Count of Evreux and ally of the King of England, committed many ravages. The Benedictine priory of Villarceaux was burnt down in 1423, forcing the nuns to take refuge in the abbey of Saint-Cyr. The seigneury of Villarceaux was fortified because it was situated on the border of the kingdom of France, very close to the Epte river which defined it. There is no record of an English or Navarrese assault on the Château de Villarceaux.
