The Maison Principale (Main House) with its so-called wasp waist silhouette visible here constitutes the historic heart of Habitation Clément, a 395-acre (160 ha) property comprising the former Clément rum distillery now converted into a museum, six aging cellars still in operation, and various residential buildings in the Creole style. Located at the top of a hill in the Domaine de l'Acajou, at Le François in Martinique, it served as a residence for the Clément family from 1887 to 1986. Listed as a Historical Monument in 1996 and restored since 2003, it allows immersion in the art of tropical living and the discovery of Creole traditional architecture and furniture. Topped with a roof made of fine scale tiles, the house has a facade of wooden tiles called essentes. Its ground floor has been extended by a first floor and side galleries adapted to the climate of the West Indies.
