The highest point of Paris

Located in the 18th arrondissement of Paris since the expansion of the capital in 1860, the former commune of Montmartre – renamed Butte Montmartre – is the highest point of the capital with an altitude of 130.53 metres. Made up of a gypsum mass, the hill has long provided the plaster of Paris. The underground excavations resulting from the intensive exploitation of the quarries in the 19th century complicated the construction of the buildings. Known for its narrow, steep streets flanked by steep staircases and for its bohemian lifestyle that attracted many artists, the Butte is dominated by the Sacré-Coeur (Sacred Heart) Basilica.
