The Sedan medieval castle, or high castle, is located on a promontory along the Meuse river. After buying the Sedan seigneury in 1424, a German nobleman, Evrard II de La Marck, built the original castle, which incorporated an older priory. This triangular castle was considerably expanded and strengthened by the descendants of Evrard II – eight princes and a princess – who made the Sedan Giant the largest castle in Europe with a surface area of 35,000 m2. The large building at the end of the main courtyard (photo) became a three-star hotel in 2002.
