The Aube department has a unique heritage of half-timbered churches from the 16th and 17th centuries. They are gathered in the northeast of the territory, full of lumber forests. Built in the 16th century, Exaltation-de-la-Sainte-Croix Church stands in the village of Bailly-le-Franc. An 85 ft slate-covered spire (26 m) dominates the second span of its nave. The upper facade of the church is covered with wooden tiles of various varieties. Wooden beams support the building's walls and give the whole its originality.
