The Habitation Céron and its zamana

The Habitation Céron in Le Prêcheur at the northern end of Martinique is a 17th-century estate now devoted to cocoa production. Its old sugar refinery has been transformed into a tourist site. The estate includes a garden labeled 'remarkable garden' in 2015 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication. A biodiversity hotspot, it is notably home to a remarkable zamana (photo) listed as one of the largest trees in the Lesser Antilles. Also known as 'rain tree', this giant has leaflets that fold in on themselves when it rains, allowing the water to reach the ground. Once the sun returns, the leaflets unfold again and shade the ground which remains cool and moist.
