With a surface area of 846 hectares, the Bois de Boulogne – which includes the Parc de Bagatelle, the Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil, the Pré Catelan and the Jardin d’Acclimatation – constitutes the green lung of western Paris. With its many pedestrian walkways, 17.3 miles (28 km) of bridle paths and 9.3 miles (15 km) of cycle paths, the Bois de Boulogne is dotted with numerous lakes, streams, ponds and even a Grande Cascade, which offer Parisians a natural area developed in the mid-19th century. This wood, located in the 16th arrondissement of the capital, is the only vestige of the Rouvray forest, former hunting ground of the kings of France.
