Two-thirds of the facade of Saint Stephen Cathedral are occupied by the rose window. Its multiple stained-glass windows once went down to the bottom of the wall, but the architect Jacques-François Blondel had them blocked in 1764. The rose's design consists of a solar and lunar halo symbolizing the world. It has massive dimensions with 91 ft in height (28 m) and 42 ft in width (13 m). Like all roses of rota style, its diameter is 36 ft (11 m). It was crafted by Hermann of Münster and completed in 1384.
