The Gothic-style Saint-Siffrein cathedral in Carpentras was built by order of the Pope of Avignon Benedict XIII on the site of the old Romanesque cathedral, which probably fell into ruins between September 1399 and March 1400. Work on the new cathedral started on February 22, 1405 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1531. Of the old cathedral only the Romanesque dome remains, its cloister having been razed in 1829 and its Romanesque bell tower demolished in 1875.
