The giraffe's tongue

Prehensile, black, slimy, leathery and powerful, the giraffe's tongue is 1.8ft (55cm) long. It is the longest among ungulates. Very mobile, it digs like a gutter to slip between the thorns and reach the most tender and nourishing shoots. It then wraps around the twigs, bringing them to the upper lip whose taste buds select and retain the interesting leaves.
