During the Upper Cretaceous, tectonic movements raised and brought out the sediment deposits formed in the Lower Cretaceous at the bottom of the epicontinental sea. Such movements created a new continent subjected to a tropical equatorial climate responsible for significant lateritic alterations. These led to the dissolution of minerals from the original sea rocks and the release of iron atoms by hydrolysis giving birth to ochres.
