The ferri or ficheiroun is a conical iron socket ending in three short points mounted on a 6.5 to 8.2 ft (2 to 2.5 m) long ash or chestnut sapling. This trident is the main tool of the Camargue herdsman who uses it to make bulls obey, especially when sorting cattle. A little slap on the muzzle or the rump is enough to put them back in line. The herdsman then rides on horseback to protect himself from the possible aggressiveness of the herd.
