The garden on the water

During the Renaissance, after the ravages of the Hundred Years’ War, the Château du Bas was transformed into a manor house with outbuildings and gardens. The Domaine de Villarceaux grew and became a large agricultural property. In the 16th century, a geometrical boxwood garden surrounded by water was built, which seemed to float on the pond of which it was the extension. During the reign of Louis XIV, the manor house was the site of the love affair of Louis de Mornay, Marquis of Villarceaux, with the famous courtesan Ninon de Lenclos. The gardens and water features were redesigned in the Italian style, according to the taste of the time.
