Above Port-Leucate in the Aude department of France, large gulls (Larus Argentatus) inhabit the skies. These birds bear the name of gabian on the Mediterranean coasts. This term comes from the Catalan ‘gavina’ and the Occitan ‘gabina ’. On the Leucate pond, the strip of sand called Bird Island is populated by gulls that have made their place there by feeding on rabbits. These large carnivores of almost 5 feet (1.50m) in wingspan, chased away the first inhabitants of the island and still require the vigilance of visitors.
