The fury of the Devil

Metz Cathedral has the 2nd highest vaults in France, and its nave stands at 136 ft (41.41 m). A legend says that the architect Pierre Perrat could not find any more inspiration for the construction of the vaults. He would have received the plans for the nave from the Devil Himself in exchange for his soul. He signed a contract that mentioned that he would be buried in the ground. Seized with remorse, Pierre Perrat asked to be inhumed with great pomp in his cathedral. His coffin was walled there, whose exact location is unknown even today. The Devil, furious, would sometimes make winds run in the ambulatory in search of his due.
