Wood stoves - like the one used here by Robert Marichy in his Arinthod woodturning workshop in the Jura department - heat by radiation. They emit a lot of heat thanks to the thick layer of their cast iron casing, which rises to a high temperature when operating and diffuses the heat into the room. The intensity and rate of combustion can be adjusted by modulating the air supply to the stove, which must also be regularly recharged with wood.
