Pointe Borgnèse marks the beginning of the marine reserve (quartering area) that encompasses the southern coast of Martinique up to Corps-de-Garde in the municipality of Sainte-Luce. There begins the vast fringing coral reef running along the southern coast of the island at a distance of a few hundred meters and extending from the Salines to the Rocher du Diamant. The fish density there is much higher than average due to the total ban on all forms of fishing and mooring. The Martinican coral flats extend over a total length of 43 miles (70 km) and cover an area of approximately 122 square miles (197 km²).
