In Villarceaux, the Château du Bas, where the graceful shadow of Ninon de Lenclos – a 17th century courtesan and woman of letters – hangs over its gardens and ponds. Some thirty springs still feed the estate, one of which has the reputation of giving eternal youth. It cascades at the foot of the Saint-Nicolas terrace, laid out as a medieval-inspired garden. During her years at Villarceaux, Ninon used to drink from the Fountain of Youth every morning and it turns out that she lived to be 85. Voltaire said that she looked about twenty years old at the end of her life.
