Before the development of the Cours Mirabeau, Place des Prêcheurs was the most frequented spot of Aix-en-Provence where merchants, actors, and knights rubbed shoulders. An imposing fountain designed by Jean Chastel was therefore built there in 1757. It consists of a narrow square basin with a low rim in the center of which stands a Calissanne stone obelisk supporting a sphere topped by a white eagle with outstretched wings. At the time, the eagle - a symbol of reason - glared at the location of the city scaffold.
