Claude Monet lived in his home in Giverny for 43 years, from 1883 to 1926. Over the years, he arranged it as he saw fit. Initially, the house called Maison du Pressoir (an apple press located in the vicinity gave its name to the district) was small. Monet endeavored to enlarge it on each side to create a farmhouse 131 ft long (40 m) and 16.5 ft wide (5 m). The barn backing onto the house became his first workshop. However, Monet arranged many gardens on his property as he mostly painted outdoors.
