Strolling through the Old Port in the early morning is a sort of ritual for the inhabitants and tourists in search of authenticity and one of the last spots of Marseille folklore. A fish market made up of a dozen stalls depending on the abundance of fishing is held there every morning of the week. For professional buyers, the wholesale fish market was transferred in 1976 near L'Estaque to the port of Saumaty which covers four hectares of basins and four hectares of land and accommodates a small fishing fleet.
