The Flight of the Eagle

On 1 March 1815, Napoleon and some 700 men landed in Golfe-Juan from the island of Elba, where the deposed emperor had been exiled. Then begins what historians have termed the Flight of the Eagle. One hundred days (from 20 March to 22 June 1815) during which Napoleon gathered his followers and triumphantly crossed France to Belgium. Wellington’s British and Blücher’s Prussians were furious and joined forces at Waterloo, joined by the Belgian and Dutch armies. They routed Napoleon’s disoriented army and signed his definitive ouster from French political life.
