No less than five castles rise in the Selestat Haut-Koenigsbourg region. The most imposing is the Haut-Koenigsbourg, standing at 2,483 ft (757 m). Located a hundred meters away, the Oedenburg is first mentioned in 1417. Its name means deserted castle and seems to indicate that at this date, it was in ruins. The Ramstein dates from 1293 and stands at an altitude of 1,420 ft (433 m). It was destroyed in 1633 by the Swedish army. Perched 1,451 ft (443 m) high on a rocky outcrop, Ortenbourg castle dominates the town of Scherwiller. It was built in the 13th century by Rudolph of Habsburg. At 853 ft (260 m) above the wine-growing village of Kintzheim, Kintzheim castle is mentioned for the first time in 1270.
