Gérardmer has experienced an increasing attractiveness during its history. In the 17th century, it was only used as a vacation venue by the dukes of Lorraine and members of religious parishes. Two centuries later, Gérardmer became a sought-after destination for industrialists and notables from Belgium, Nancy, or Paris. Luxurious villas and hotels multiplied on the shores of its lake. The first Tourist Office in France was invented by the people of Gérardmer in 1875. It was then called the Committee of Walks.
