The first seaside resort in France

Often considered the first seaside town in France, Dieppe first attracted English tourists who came to rediscover the history shared with Normandy. The golden youth of the 17th and 18th centuries traveled and undertook The Great Tour, from which the word tourist was born. Under the French Empire, Queen Hortense came to supervise the construction of the first bath resort and drew the gardens bordering the beach. The Duchess of Berry definitively launched the fashion for baths in 1824. The first pleasure train from Paris brought nearly 1,900 Parisians in July 1850. At the beginning of September, 3,000 others came to spend the day on the 1-mile long (1,500 m) beach.
