On July 4, 2019, the forest of Mount Pelée (photo) and that of the Pitons du Carbet were labeled Forêt d'Exception (exceptional forest) in Martinique. This label, awarded for the first time in Overseas France, distinguishes these humid tropical areas recognized for their unique heritage in terms of history, landscapes, and biodiversity. It applies to an area of 17,255 acres (6,983 ha) which alone provides 70% of the island's drinking water resources. It aims not only to make known and enhance the biodiversity and natural resources of these forests but also to structure and develop green tourism there. Thus, an interpretive trail in the form of an illustrated tale has been set up in this forest. Awarded for a renewable period of five years, the label also marks a first step towards the international recognition that would represent the long-awaited inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List of the volcanoes and forests of Mount Pelée together with the peaks of northern Martinique.
